Learning to See Anew
April 7th, 2011 to May 5th, 2011
In our hectic daily lives we often rush without truly seeing the world — and people — around us anymore. As adults we have forgotten the child’s skill of seeing the wonderful and miraculous in the simple details of life: the colourful splash of oil in a puddle; the amazing world emerging from the inside of a budding flower; the drama unfolding in the rusty can lying in the curb. We don’t lay in the grass anymore, finding cloud creatures. We often yearn for the quiet and connection these seemingly simple activities gave us when we were younger; and yet we can’t find our way back easily.
Learning to See Anew is a workshop developed by the photographer Frank Gross. Frank uses the camera’s lens as the tool to re-focus our vision to the essential — and beautiful — things of everyday life. He shows us how we can find those visions of beauty, ‘perfection’, and harmony when we consciously take snapshots of that which we see around us every day. By collapsing the world into two dimensions and reducing our frame of vision, the camera forces us to learn to see anew — and in the process we can re-discover the child-like art of seeing the world as a miracle.
Frank’s many years as a photographer allow him to clearly and simply explain the basics of seeing in this way. Sabine’s experience as psychotherapists adds strength to the personal transformation that can be reached when we experience the world around us anew. Together, this makes for a wonderfully creative, experiential, and joyful life-changing workshop.
Participants are expected to have a basic working knowledge of their cameras — this is NOT a technical ‘how-to-take-a-photo’ course.
Each class includes experiential exercises. Creative exercises for you and your camera will be assigned from week to week.
