Therapy with Interns

“The expert at anything was once a beginner.”

Welcoming a new intern: Breanne J. Benson.

Working with a therapy intern has many advantages for the client:

  • Interns have a vast resource of up-to-date knowledge in the field of therapy, something that can be difficult to maintain for the seasoned therapist.
  • Interns generally have great enthusiasm for the work and often go the extra mile to find resources and information that helps their client in their process.
  • Intern fees are usually lower than the fees for seasoned therapists.

Therapy interns are fully trained in the theory and effectiveness of therapeutic tools. They have undergone a thorough training program, have done work on their own emotional and mental wellbeing, and have passed all the tests and exams to proof their knowledge. The internship is their time to put this knowledge into practice. Under the guidance of an experienced supervisor they learn to deal with increasingly difficult client issues and find their own voice and confidence in working with clients.

As the intern’s supervisor I am officially the lead-therapist for the client. I am available to both client and intern should there be any concerns. Sessions an intern conducts with their clients are reviewed with me. This means that effectively the client gets the benefit of the intern’s energy and fresh perspective as well as the assurance that comes with my years of experience.

The process to start working with an intern is the same as with any other therapy sessions:

  1. You book a first free meeting (usually about 15 minute long) with the intern to see if you and the are a good fit.
  2. The intern will review your goals for therapy with me to determine if your goals fall within the intern’s scope of practice.
  3. If your goals and their skills are a good fit and you decide to work with the intern you will book regular sessions at appropriate intervals.
  4. Cancellation and payment policies are the same as for all other sessions at the clinic from which the intern operates (please enquire about details with the intern).

If you have any questions about working with an intern or would like to schedule a phone interview with me to get the process started, please feel free to contact me.
