An online, self-paced training course for therapists who want to take their work with clients to the next level.
Many of the challenges our clients bring into therapy have their roots in earlier experiences. We may meet fear that developed long ago, patterns that repeat across relationships, or beliefs about the self that were formed in childhood. Inner Child work offers a compassionate and effective way of understanding these experiences—not simply as problems to be solved, but as parts of the person that are asking to be seen, understood, and integrated.
At the same time, healing does not happen by returning to childhood alone. It happens through the development of the Inner Adult—the part of us that can observe with curiosity, respond with wisdom, and make conscious choices in the present. The goal is not to rescue the Inner Child, but to strengthen the Adult who can build a new relationship with that child.
Rather than presenting Inner Child work as a stand-alone technique, this course explores it as a way of seeing the therapeutic process. It is a perspective that can be integrated into many therapeutic orientations and one that encourages deeper observation, stronger therapeutic relationships, and more enduring change. Whether or not you use formal Inner Child exercises in your practice, learning to recognize and work with these inner dynamics can deepen your therapeutic presence and help your clients move toward lasting change.
What is Inner Child Work?
Inner Child work begins with a simple observation: our childhood does not remain in the past. The ways we learned to protect ourselves, seek connection, respond to fear, or understand our own worth continue to influence how we think, feel, relate, and make decisions as adults.
The term Inner Child describes those younger aspects of ourselves that still carry the emotional experiences, beliefs, needs, and creative potential of earlier stages of life. When these parts remain unheard or disconnected, they continue to influence our lives outside our conscious awareness.
The purpose of Inner Child work is not to relive childhood or blame the past. Rather, it is to bring compassionate awareness to these patterns so they can be understood, integrated, and transformed.
Central to this process is the development of the Inner Adult—the part of ourselves that can observe with curiosity, respond with wisdom, and provide what the younger parts were unable to receive at the time. As the Inner Adult develops, the relationship between these inner parts begins to change, allowing greater freedom, resilience, and authenticity in everyday life.
Because these dynamics are present in almost every client, I view Inner Child work not simply as a therapeutic technique, but as a lens through which many aspects of psychotherapy can be understood. Whether working psychodynamically, person-centred, experiential, or transpersonally, an awareness of these inner relationships can deepen both therapeutic understanding and clinical intervention.
At the same time, not every client experiences themselves in terms of an “Inner Child” or different “parts” of the personality. This course therefore also explores how to work with the underlying dynamics without relying on any particular language or model. The goal is not to teach clients a new vocabulary, but to help them understand their own experience in a way that feels authentic, accessible, and meaningful to them.
What You Will Learn
This course combines theory, clinical application, experiential learning, and reflective practice. Throughout the training, participants will explore both the conceptual foundations of Inner Child work and practical ways of integrating it into their own therapeutic approach.
Topics include:
- Understanding the development and function of the Inner Child and Inner Adult
- Recognizing childhood adaptations and their influence on adult relationships, emotions, and behaviour
- Building and strengthening the Inner Adult as the foundation for lasting therapeutic change
- Working safely with traumatic and emotionally charged childhood experiences
- Practical interventions, guided explorations, and experiential techniques
- Adapting Inner Child work to clients who do not relate to the language of “parts” or the “Inner Child”
- Integrating Inner Child principles into a variety of therapeutic orientations, including person-centred, psychodynamic, experiential, and transpersonal approaches
- Clinical considerations, pacing, boundaries, and ethical practice
By the end of the course, participants will not only understand the theory behind Inner Child work but will be able to recognize these dynamics in clinical practice, adapt the approach to different clients and therapeutic orientations, and support the gradual development of the Inner Adult as a foundation for lasting change.
Why Experiential Learning?
Psychotherapy is more than a collection of theories or techniques. It is a way of seeing, listening, and being in relationship. While concepts can be learned through reading and discussion, therapeutic presence develops through experience.
Throughout this course, theory is woven together with experiential exercises, reflection, demonstration, and discussion. Participants have the opportunity to experience many of the processes themselves before considering how they might apply them in clinical work. Experiential learning not only deepens understanding but also helps therapists develop greater confidence, flexibility, and authenticity in their work.
My teaching follows the same process I hope participants will bring into their therapeutic work:
Observe. Understand. Integrate.
We begin by learning to observe—with curiosity rather than judgment. We then seek to understand the patterns, needs, and meanings that emerge. Finally, we explore how these insights can be integrated into both our clinical practice and our own personal and professional development.
Experience does not replace theory, nor does theory replace experience. Each informs and deepens the other. By bringing observation, understanding, and integration together, experiential learning allows knowledge to become lived wisdom—something we not only know about, but embody in our work with clients.
After all, we cannot guide our clients into places we have never been willing to explore ourselves.

I found this workshop to be really informative and educational. I took a lot of my own notes during the workshop and really enjoyed learning about the Inner Child and how you can use this approach in a therapeutic setting. I left this course feeling like I had tons of tips and tools in my back pocket to use in session with clients and feeling more confident in my ability as a practitioner in facilitating Inner Child work.
I participated in the Inner Child Workshop in October 2019. My goal was to deepen my understanding of how to work with clients in a concrete way. I found the 3 days to be highly informative. Sabine presented an altogether new way of thinking about Inner Child work and how to approach it. I came away with some valuable tools to integrate into my practice.
